Packaging Dieline
While we offer standard dieline templates for various packaging types and sizes, for custom boxes requiring specific dimensions, shapes, or materials, we can create dielines after you submit a sample or production requirements. This is because the type of material you choose impacts the dieline design. To ensure proper folding and assembly, we create a prototype box with your chosen material to determine the ideal dieline.
What the lines mean
- Red solid line: cut. This is the outline of the box and any openings, such as a window.
- Blue dashed line: crease. This is where the board folds.
- Green long dashes: perforation. Small cuts where a part can tear out or bend easily. Only some boxes have them.
- Orange line: bleed. This is extra artwork area beyond the cut line, if you choose to add it.
Free dieline templates
Our free dieline templates cover tuck end boxes, mailers, trays, sleeves, shipping boxes, shaped boxes, tags, cards and more. Enter your size, check the pattern with its measurement lines, and download it as a PDF, SVG or DXF file at real size.
The templates are free, with no sign-up. You can open the file in design software such as Illustrator, and place your artwork on it. You can also choose a bleed of 3 mm or 5 mm and add size labels to the file.
The templates do not compensate for board thickness. They are a starting point for planning and artwork layout. We confirm the final dieline with you before printing.
How to use a template
- Pick the box style on the dielines page.
- Type in the length, width and height. If you are unsure how to measure, see measuring packaging dimensions.
- Check the preview and the measurement lines.
- Download the file in the format your design software uses.
- Place your artwork on the pattern. Keep important text and logos away from the fold and cut lines.
- Send the artwork with your quote request, or get a free quote for the size you chose.
When we create the dieline for you
For a custom size, shape or material we create the dieline after you send your requirements, and we confirm the final dieline with you. You approve it together with your artwork before production begins.
What to send us
- Your product's dimensions: see how to measure.
- The material you would like.
- The quantity you plan to order.
- Your artwork, if you have it. You can attach up to 5 files of 20 MB each to the quote form. We also offer free design support: see artwork and proofs.
Common mistakes
- Designing on a template of the wrong box style or size.
- Placing text too close to a fold or cut line.
- Leaving the artwork short of the cut line, so a thin white edge can show when the box is cut. Bleed prevents this.
- Leaving the template's guide lines in the final print file.
- Treating a free template as the final production file. We confirm the final dieline with you first.
