What to Look for in Cake Boxes
A cake box has to carry a heavy, soft product without bending, and it should look good on a counter or in a customer's hands.
- Cake size and height. Common cake sizes are 6, 8 and 10 inch rounds and quarter or half sheets, but every bakery's cakes differ. Measure the base and the height with the topping, and tell us the largest cake you sell in the box.
- Box type. A one-piece folding box suits most cakes. A box with a window lets customers see the cake, and a box with a handle suits carrying.
- Height of the box. The box should be taller than the cake with room for the topping, so the lid does not touch the frosting. Tell us if the cake has tall decoration.
- A cake board or insert. A board under the cake keeps it flat and easy to lift. Ask about an insert if the cake needs holding in place.
- Food contact. Tell us if the cake will touch the box or sit on a board, and we confirm suitable options.
- Strength. A larger cake needs a stronger base and sides. Tell us how many layers and how heavy the cake is.
Where Cake Boxes Are Used
- Bakeries and cake shops selling whole cakes and slices.
- Home bakers and online cake sellers delivering to customers.
- Cafes and restaurants selling desserts to take away.
- Events, birthdays and weddings where the cake box is part of the gift.
- Pastry counters and farmers markets selling slices and small cakes.
Artwork and Printing Tips for Cake Boxes
- A large top panel suits your logo and name, and a short line about the bakery.
- A window shows the cake, so put the brand on the parts of the lid and sides that stay printed.
- Keep text away from the window and from the folds.
- Think about how the box sits on a counter, and put the brand on the top and the front.
- Print the colors you use in your shop, so the box matches your brand.
- Ask for a layout and place your artwork on it before you approve.
Planning Your Order
Measure the cake and decide on a window or a handle. Tell us how the box is carried or delivered. The measuring guide shows which side counts as length, width and height. For slices, cupcakes and other bakery boxes, see our Bakery packaging page, and for a box that holds donuts see donut boxes.
Test a sample with a real cake before you order many. You can start with the Standard Sample Kit, which is $50 with shipping included, or pick another type from the Samples page. Your quote gives the pricing and minimums.
