What makes retail packaging different

Say what it is at a glance. A retail pack sits next to other brands. Put the product name and the main benefit where a shopper looks first, and keep the detail for the sides and the back.

Decide how it will be displayed first. A pack that stands on a shelf needs a steady base, a pack that hangs needs a hang tab, and a pack at the checkout may suit a counter display box. The answer changes the box type, so settle it first.

Carry the information a pack needs. Ingredients, instructions, warnings and a barcode are your responsibility as the brand. Tell us what must appear and we place it on the dieline, and you approve the artwork before production starts.

Size the box to the product. Check the fit with a sample before a full run. The free dieline templates and the measuring guide help you get the size right.

Which retail packaging should I choose?

Start with where and how the product will be displayed.

  • A box that stands out on a shelf

Tuck boxes can be printed with textures and finishes. A folding carton is a single layer of paperboard, a good fit for lightweight retail items.

  • A pack that hangs on a peg hook

Tuck boxes can be made with a hang tab, a hanger or a side hang tab. Hang tags attach to apparel, jars, candles and electronics.

  • A counter or floor display

Countertop display boxes are made for checkouts, and freestanding displays suit larger retail spaces. They are made from corrugated or paperboard.

  • A lightweight product in a small box

Both suit lightweight items. A pillow box closes without tape or adhesive in many cases, and tuck boxes ship flat.

  • A gift or favor pack

A pillow box wraps a small gift, a gable box has a peaked roof and a carry handle, and a rigid box is the gift box for a high-end product.

  • A premium, high-end product

Rigid boxes come with magnetic closures, in drawer styles and more. A tray and sleeve box gives a slide-open reveal.

  • A bag to carry the purchase

Paper bags are printed in your size, paper stock and handle style, for retail stores, boutiques and events.

  • Shipping to customers who order online

A shelf pack is not built for a delivery. Mailer boxes and shipping boxes are corrugated, and tuck boxes can also be made with corrugated materials for added strength.

Planning packaging for the shelf?

Tell us what you sell, where it will be displayed, its size and how many you need, and we will recommend a pack. You can also order a Standard Sample Kit ($50, shipping included) to see and feel packaging samples first. Rigid boxes, and boxes that ship assembled, may not be in the kit: ask us about rigid samples.

Extras and finishes for the pack

These items from PacksDo are printed with your brand and go with the box.

Finishes for the shelf

Finishes change how a pack looks and feels in the hand. These are the surface finishes we offer.

  • MatteA smooth, non-reflective surface with a softer look.
  • GlossyGlossy and reflective. This surface tends to highlight fingerprints more.
  • SatinSemi-glossy, a balance between a matte and a glossy look.
  • Soft touchLooks like matte, with a velvet-like feel to the touch.

Add-on finishes

Foil stamping, embossing or debossing and spot UV are available on boxes, sleeves, cards, hang tags and paper bags, and window patching on boxes. Ask for them in your quote.

Need something else?

A pack for a shelf is not always the pack for a delivery, a premium gift or an influencer mailer. These pages cover those jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is custom retail packaging?

Custom retail packaging is the box, sleeve, tag or bag your product is sold in, made to fit it and printed with your brand. It has to catch the eye on a shelf, a peg hook or a counter, and carry the information a shopper needs. We make it as paperboard boxes, rigid boxes, display boxes, sleeves, hang tags, stickers and paper bags.

Which box is best for a retail shelf?

For lightweight products, tuck boxes, pillow boxes and folding cartons are the usual choices, and display boxes suit counters and trade shows. Rigid boxes suit high-end products and gift boxes. The guide above matches common needs to a box type, and we confirm the best fit when you request a quote.

Can retail packaging hang on a peg hook?

Yes. Tuck boxes can be made with a hang tab, a hanger or a side hang tab. Hang tags attach to apparel, jars, candles and electronics. Tell us how the product will be displayed and we confirm the best option with your quote.

What are the minimum order quantities and prices?

Rigid boxes start from 50 units. Tuck boxes, pillow boxes, display boxes, gable boxes, folding cartons and packaging sleeves start from 100 units. Stickers and labels, hang tags and cards start from 500 units, and paper bags start from 500 units. Each page shows a starting price per unit, and the final price depends on the size, quantity, material, printing and finishes. Quotes include shipping.

Can you put our barcode and required text on the pack?

Yes. Tell us what must appear on the pack, such as ingredients, instructions, warnings or a barcode, and we place it on the dieline. What must legally appear on your pack is your responsibility as the brand. We offer free design support, and you can also download a free dieline template to plan your artwork.

Can I order a sample before a full order?

Yes. The Standard Sample Kit holds different packaging samples, mostly chosen to match your niche or packaging type, so you can see the materials, printing details and construction up close. You can also order a structural sample, an unprinted prototype that shows the size and form of your box. The kit may not include rigid boxes or boxes that ship assembled: ask us about rigid samples. See the samples page for every sample type.

How long does it take to get retail packaging?

Production usually takes 5–7 working days, and 16–21 working days for larger orders. It starts once your artwork is approved and payment is received. Delivery usually takes another 4–5 working days, depending on the carrier and your location, so a typical order arrives in about 2 weeks and larger orders take longer. See the turnaround guide.
