What to Look for in Void Fill

Void fill takes up the empty space in a box so the product does not move. The right choice depends on what you ship.

  • What moves. Heavy items need firm fill that does not compress. Light items need only a cushion.
  • Type of fill. Crinkled paper, air cushions, paper wrap and other types behave differently. Ask what is possible and tell us what you pack.
  • Box size. If the box is much bigger than the product, you use more fill. A better-fitting box often saves both fill and shipping.
  • Look. Some customers see the fill first. A branded or colored fill adds to the unboxing.
  • Packing speed. A system with a machine is faster at volume, and by hand is simpler for small shops.

Where Void Fill Is Used

  • E-commerce shops shipping products in boxes that are larger than the item.
  • Gift and subscription box brands that fill boxes for looks.
  • Fragile product sellers, such as glass, candles and ceramics.
  • Wholesalers sending mixed items in one carton.

Artwork and Printing Tips for Void Fill

  • Most void fill is plain, and branding comes from color. A colored fill that matches your brand is often enough.
  • If you want print, a simple repeated mark works, since fill is crumpled and a large design is lost.
  • Choose a color that sets off your product. A white product looks good on a dark fill, and a dark product on light.
  • Keep text and detail minimal. It will not be read when crumpled.
  • Tell us your colors as Pantone or CMYK values if it matters, and we confirm what is possible.

Planning Your Order

Pack a real product in a real carton and see how much fill it takes to stop movement. Shake the box and drop test it gently. Think about how much storage the fill needs, since it is bulky.

Check a sample. The Standard Sample Kit costs $50 with shipping included, and other sample types are listed on the Samples page. Pricing and minimums come with your quote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order custom void fill?

Send your size, quantity, delivery location and artwork with a quote request. We prepare pricing based on the size, material, printing, finishing and quantity, and reply within 1 business day. After you approve the layout and artwork, the order goes into production.

How much does custom void fill cost?

Pricing depends on the size, quantity, material, printing and finishes. Request a quote and we will prepare pricing for your project.

How long does it take to get custom void fill?

Timing depends on the product, the size and the quantity, and it is confirmed with your quote. Production starts once your artwork is approved and payment is received. Delivery usually takes another 4–5 working days, depending on the carrier and your location, so a typical order arrives in about 2 weeks and larger orders take longer. See the turnaround guide.

How much void fill do I need?

Pack a real product, fill the gaps until nothing moves, and note how much you used. Multiply by your shipments for the quantity.

Which void fill is best for fragile items?

It depends on the item. Heavy and sharp items need firm fill that does not flatten. Tell us what you ship and we advise.

Should I test a box before I ship it?

Yes. Pack a box the way you will ship it, close it, shake it and tip it. If you feel the product move, add fill. If the box bulges, you used too much.

Can a better-fitting box reduce the amount of void fill?

Yes, a box that fits the product well needs less fill. See our shipping boxes and mailer boxes.
