What to Look for in Hanger Boxes
A hanger box has to hold the product, hang straight on a peg hook and still read clearly from the aisle.
- Hang tab style. A hanger box has a tab with a hole or slot at the top so it hangs from a peg hook. Some designs use a single tab and some a double tab or a side tab. Tell us how your store hangs the product.
- Product weight. A heavier product pulls on the tab. Tell us the weight so we can confirm the board and the tab design hold up.
- Structure. Common hanger box structures are a 5 panel hanger with an auto lock bottom, a snap lock bottom or tuck ends, and a reverse tuck end hanger. You can see each one flat in our free hanger box dielines.
- Bottom closure. The bottom can close with tucks, an auto lock bottom or a snap lock bottom. Pick the one that suits how fast you pack and how much the box carries.
- Front panel. A hanger box usually shows only its front, so the brand, the product name and the key facts have to fit there.
- Window or insert. A window lets shoppers see the product, and an insert keeps small parts from sliding. Ask about either if your product needs one.
- Hole or slot size. The hole or slot has to fit your store's hook. Tell us the hook diameter, or whether your store uses a slot, so the tab is cut to match.
Where Hanger Boxes Are Used
- Retail pegboard displays in stores that hang products in rows.
- Small accessories and gadgets such as chargers, cables and phone accessories.
- Beauty and personal care items such as brushes, sets and small tools.
- Hardware, craft and stationery products sold from hooks.
- Packaged sets and kits where several small items hang together as one pack.
Artwork and Printing Tips for Hanger Boxes
- Keep the hole or slot area free of text and logos, because the hook covers it.
- Put the brand name and product name high on the front, where they stay visible when boxes hang close together.
- Use the space around the hole for a short benefit line or an icon that tells shoppers what the product does.
- Check how the box looks hanging in a row, not only flat.
- Keep text away from folds and from the edges of the tab.
- Ask for a layout and place your artwork on it before you approve.
Planning Your Order
Measure the product and the hook size at your store, and tell us how many pieces go in each box. The measuring guide shows which side counts as length, width and height. You can see how these boxes are built in our free hanger box dielines and the pillow box with a hang tab. If your product is light and small, a pillow box with a hang tab can also work, and the tuck boxes page lists hang tab options on a standard carton.
Test a sample on a real peg hook before you order many. You can start with the Standard Sample Kit, which is $50 with shipping included, or pick another type from the Samples page. Your quote gives the pricing and minimums.
