What to Look for in Takeaway Bags

A takeaway bag carries food from your counter to the customer's door, so it has to open fast, stand up while you fill it and survive the walk home.

  • What goes in. A sandwich, a box of pastries and a full family meal need different bag sizes. Tell us the biggest order you pack and we size the bag to it.
  • Handles or no handles. A handleless flat-bottom bag, often called an SOS bag, is quick to fill and cheap to store. A handled bag is easier to carry when the load is heavy. See the SOS paper bags and the handle styles on the Paper Bags page.
  • Flat base. A bag with a flat base stands open on the counter, so staff can fill it with one hand. Check the base against the box or container you put inside.
  • Food contact. Tell us what goes in and whether it is dry, warm or oily, and we advise on paper and coating options. Ask about a varnish coating if you want help protecting the print.
  • Strength. A heavy meal in a thin bag tears at the handle or the base. Tell us the usual weight and we confirm what suits it.
  • Print. The whole front and back can carry your design. Think about whether a bold one-color logo or a full-color pattern fits your brand and your budget.

Where Takeaway Bags Are Used

  • Restaurants and takeaway shops that send meals home with the customer.
  • Bakeries and cafes that bag bread, pastries and coffee-shop treats.
  • Delis, sandwich bars and food trucks that need a quick bag for a single item.
  • Delivery kitchens and caterers that bag orders before the driver collects them.
  • Markets and street food stalls that want a bag people remember.

Artwork and Printing Tips for Takeaway Bags

  • A takeaway bag is seen at arm's length on the street, so use a large, simple logo with strong contrast to the bag color.
  • Brown kraft paper prints best in one color, which suits a bold logo. For full color, ask about white paper.
  • Keep text and important artwork away from the top fold, the bottom fold and the side gusset folds.
  • Put the shop name, address or website on the side gusset or the back, so people can find you again.
  • A repeating pattern hides small differences in placement from one bag to the next.
  • Ask for a layout and check your artwork on it before you approve.

Planning Your Order

Pack your biggest order exactly as you serve it, with the boxes or containers, and measure it. Decide whether you want handles, and note whether your height includes them: tell us the bag height without the handles, so there is no confusion. If you are unsure how to take the measurements, the measuring guide shows which side counts as length, width and height. For the matching boxes see takeaway boxes, and for baked goods see our Bakery packaging page.

Test a sample with a real order before you buy many. You can start with the Standard Sample Kit, which is $50 with shipping included, or pick another type from the Samples page. Your quote gives the pricing and minimums.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I order custom takeaway bags?

Send your size, quantity, delivery location and artwork with a quote request. We prepare pricing based on the size, material, printing, finishing and quantity, and reply within 1 business day. After you approve the layout and artwork, the order goes into production.

How much do custom takeaway bags cost?

Pricing depends on the size, quantity, material, printing and finishes. Request a quote and we will prepare pricing for your project.

How long does it take to get custom takeaway bags?

Timing depends on the product, the size and the quantity, and it is confirmed with your quote. Production starts once your artwork is approved and payment is received. Delivery usually takes another 4–5 working days, depending on the carrier and your location, so a typical order arrives in about 2 weeks and larger orders take longer. See the turnaround guide.

What size takeaway bag do I need?

Pack your largest typical order, boxes and all, and measure it. Tell us the length, width and height, and we confirm the bag size with your quote.

Should a takeaway bag have handles?

It depends on the load. A handleless SOS bag is the fastest to fill and the simplest to store. A handled bag suits heavier or bulkier orders. See the Paper Bags page for the handle styles.

Is the bag suitable for hot or oily food?

Tell us what goes in and whether it is dry, warm or oily, and we advise on paper and coating options for food use. We do not promise how a bag behaves with a particular food before we know the details.

Can I put my logo on a takeaway bag?

Yes. The front, back and sides can carry your artwork. Send your logo and colors with your quote request and we prepare a layout for your approval.

Are takeaway bags the same as paper bags?

Most takeaway bags are paper bags made for food. This page covers the questions a food business asks. For handle styles and paper options see Paper Bags.

How much weight can a takeaway bag hold?

That depends on the paper weight, the bag size, the base and the handles, so we do not promise one number. Tell us the heaviest order you pack, and we confirm what suits it before you order.

Are takeaway bags strong enough for delivery orders?

They can be, when the bag is sized to the order and the paper suits the load. Tell us how far the bags travel and what goes in them. A sample bag packed with a real order is the best test.

Can I print a QR code on a takeaway bag?

Yes. A QR code can go on the front, back or side of the bag. Keep it large, on a flat area away from the folds, and use strong contrast so phones read it. Check it on the layout before you approve.

Can I see a proof before the full order is made?

Yes. We prepare a layout with your artwork on it for your approval before production, and you can order a sample first. See the Samples page.

What is the minimum order for custom takeaway bags?

It depends on the bag size and style, so we confirm it in your quote. Tell us the quantity you have in mind, and we tell you what is possible.
